The Oceans Affairs Office was established by NEC decision No. 03/2015. Consequently, the newly established office was created under the department.

The office is responsible for providing legal, scientific and technical advice on matters relating to the seas and maritime boundaries of Papua New Guinea with reference to legislation, International Conventions (UN Law of the Sea Convention 1982), and applicable technology and scientifc research.
