The proposed national oceans policy, working with the Maritime Zones Act 2015 seeks to improve the governance framework for the sustainable use and management of the oceans and its resources in PNG. It brings all stakeholders such as the government, provincial government, coastal communities, NGOs and private sector together under the overarching framework of the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention to manage the use of the ocean and its resources in a holistic manner. The draft policy has been developed in consultation with the national oceans committee which comprises mostly of stakeholders who have a mandate in the ocean space.

As discussed during the national oceans forum convened from the 04th – 06th of September 2019, we are now inviting comments on the draft policy. All comments should be made in writing and addressed to:

The Secretary

Department of Justice and Attorney General

P.O. Box 591, WAIGANI, NCD

The deadline for comments is 14th of October, 2019. All comments will be considered and incorporated accordingly into the draft policy and technical report, and will be discussed in the second Oceans Forum to be convened later in October, 2019.
