
Dr. Eric Kwa was appointed Secretary of the Department of Justice and Attorney General of Papua New Guinea on the 12th of November, 2018. He was formerly the Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Papua New Guinea Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CL&RC), a position he held for 7 years.
Prior to his posting as Secretary for CL&RC, he was a Professor of Law at the University of Papua New Guinea and a former Dean of the Law School.
Dr. Kwa holds a PhD in Environmental Law from the Auckland University, New Zealand. He also has a Master of Laws with Honors (LLM (Hon)) in Environmental Law from Wollongong University, Australia and Law Degree with Honors (LLB (Hon)) from the University of Papua New Guinea.
He has researched and published widely in the field of law. Dr Kwa has published Chapters in various books both internationally and locally; and has presented more than 40 papers in both national and international conferences.
Being a strong advocate of gender equity and participation of women in the society, the Government of Papua New Guinea awarded him the Schola Kakas Award in 2015, in recognition for his efforts in supporting and promoting the women of Papua New Guinea.
Dr. Kwa is from Siassi Island in the Morobe Province. He is married to Dr. Viola Kwa, a medical academic of the School of Medicine and Medical Sciences at UPNG. Both have 7 beautiful children, 4 girls and 3 boys.
